A 30-year-old Camden man who was wounded in a shootout with Philadelphia police officers Monday in the city's Fairhill section was trying to flee in a vehicle he had carjacked at gunpoint earlier in the day, police said Tuesday.

Jose Gonzales of the 900 block of Cedar Street in Camden was in critical condition at Temple University Hospital with gunshot wounds in the torso and legs, police said.

Just before 4:45 p.m. Monday, 26th District officers were dispatched to the 2200 block of North Fairhill Street to investigate a report of a man with a gun. The responding officers saw Gonzales holding a handgun and attempting to enter a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, police said.

Gonzales failed to comply with orders to drop the gun and fired two rounds at the officers, police said. Two officers returned fire and struck Gonzales, who dropped his gun and was arrested without further incident. The officers were not injured.

Two bullets believed to have been fired by Gonzales struck a nearby home. The occupants were not hurt.

The handgun was a 9mm pistol with eight rounds in the magazine and one fired cartridge casing in the chamber. A second 9mm handgun was also recovered at the scene.

The Monte Carlo was reported stolen in a gunpoint carjacking in Camden County around 2 p.m. Monday. The description of the suspect matched Gonzales, police said.

Formal charges were pending, police said.

The two officers were placed on mandatory administrative duty pending an Internal Affairs investigation.
