A 27-year-old man was charged with third-degree murder after his 2-year-old son was killed in a traffic accident in Bucks County the man caused while making his getaway from an alleged shoplifting incident, authorities said.

Christopher D. Kuhn, of Hamilton, N.J., was arraigned Tuesday night before Magisterial District Judge Robert L. Wagner Jr., who set bail at $5 million cash.

Shortly after noon Tuesday, Kuhn's gold Jeep SUV ran a red light as it was heading south on Route 13 in Tullytown Borough when it struck another vehicle and rolled over. The toddler was ejected onto the highway.

Kuhn got out of the jeep, paused to look at his son, then ran from the scene, prosecutors said. He was captured a short time later.

His son was taken to Lower Bucks Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Kuhn allegedly stole $228 worth of merchandise from a Walmart before the accident.

Officials said police were not chasing when Kuhn ran the red light.

His New Jersey driver's license was suspended.
