Imagine watching an employee kill roaches with their bare hands. That is what one Philadelphia health inspector witnessed while examining area eateries.

Inspectors also found an old paint bucket that was being used to store rice, another bucket this time from Home Depot that was used to store cornmeal and, of course, a live mouse in the utility closet.

Philly health inspectors closed 47 facilities for various violations between Aug. 16 and Aug. 31. The latest round up included a McDonald's, 7-Eleven, KFC, Little Caesar's and McCormick & Schmick's on Broad St.

Inspectors also returned to Joy Tsin Lau, the site of one of the largest outbreaks of suspected foodborne illness in Philadelphia. In 2015, nearly 100 lawyers and law students were sickened after attending a banquet at the Chinatown restaurant.

Inspectors visit nearly 1,000 eateries and food retailers every two weeks. Each inspection is generally regarded as a snapshot in time, and not necessarily a reflection of day-to-day conditions. Most violations were corrected immediately in the presence of an inspector.
