A fatal shooting Tuesday night in downtown West Chester prompted West Chester University to alert students as police searched for the gunman.

The shooting occurred at 9:11 p.m. behind 212 E. Market St. in the borough, according to Tuesday's alert. On Wednesday afternoon, the school said one person was killed in the shooting. The  victim, whose identity was withheld, was not a student, the university said.

Police told the school that investigators believe the killing was a targeted shooting and that possible suspects had been identified. "Borough police say they see no reason for concern at this time," the university said.

Multiple networks, including 6ABC and FOX29, had reported that a man was shot in the chest and transported to Paoli Hospital.

West Chester Borough Police asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact police at 610-696-2700.
