July 4th in Philly: Road closures and public transit

Philadelphia is gearing up for big Independence Day celebrations — and that means residents and businesses should prepare for road closures and public-transit adjustments across the city.

The bulk of the closures are in the area near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the Wawa Welcome America festival and fireworks, and near Independence Mall for a parade and Philly POPS concert.

Here’s what you need to know about getting around Philadelphia for the Fourth of July:

Road closures

Friday, June 30

  • Chestnut Street from Fifth to Sixth Streets, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Kelly Drive from Strawberry Mansion to Fountain Green Drives, all day

Saturday, July 1

  • Chestnut Street from Fifth to Sixth Streets, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Kelly Drive from Strawberry Mansion to Fountain Green Drives, all day

Sunday, July 2

  • Kelly Drive from Strawberry Mansion to Fountain Green Drives, until 8 p.m.

Monday, July 3

  • Chestnut Street from Fifth to Sixth Streets, all day
  • Fifth Street from Market to Walnut Streets, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Sixth Street from Arch to Chestnut Streets, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Market to Chestnut will remain closed overnight)
  • Inner lanes of the Parkway from 20th Street to Eakins Oval, starting at 9:30 a.m.

Tuesday, July 4

  • Chestnut Street from Fifth to Sixth Streets, until 5 p.m.
  • Sixth Street from Market to Chestnut Streets, until 5 p.m.
  • Chestnut Street from Fifth to Front Streets, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Front Street from Market to Dock Streets, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Chestnut Street from Sixth to Ninth Streets, from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Ninth Street from Walnut to Market Streets, from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Market street from 10th to Front Streets, from 10:45 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Walnut Street from Second to 6th Streets, for about 20 minutes around noon
  • The entire Parkway from 18th Street to the Art Museum, all day
  • Some side streets immediately off the Parkway, all day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, all day
  • Kelly Drive near Philadelphia Museum of Art, all day
  • Schuylkill River Trail behind Philadelphia Museum of Art, all day
  • Spring Garden Street Bridge and from 31st to 34th Streets, starting at 4 p.m.
  • Interstate 76 on and off ramps at Spring Garden Street, starting at 4 p.m.

All streets, including the Parkway, should reopen by 5 a.m. Wednesday. More maps of the closures are available on the city’s website.

Access

A limited-access security perimeter, allowing only festival-goers and residents, will be from 18th to 25th Streets and from Arch to Spring Garden Streets, will be in place from 5 a.m. Tuesday through early Wednesday.

Public transportation

SEPTA

  • The transit agency will operate on a Sunday schedule Tuesday, with some additional late-night service.
  • Extra subway trains will run on the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines from 4:30 p.m. Tuesday until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Night Owl buses will run starting at 12:30 a.m.
  • Late-night Regional Rail trains will serve the Airport, Chestnut Hill East, Chestnut Hill West, Doylestown, Fox Chase, Malvern, Media/Elwyn, Marcus Hook, Trenton, Warminster, West Trenton and Wilmington Stations. A schedule is on SEPTA’s website.
  • Extra late-night trolleys will run on Routes 10, 11, 13, 34 and 36 as needed.
  • Bus Routes 7, 32, 33, 38, 43 and 48 will be detoured due to the road closures.
